In the Acts of the Apostles, the first believers in Jesus are called followers "of the way." Today, in the Gospel of Luke, Jesus begins his journey to Jerusalem. Prerequisite in walking with Jesus is to listen to Jesus. To the would be disciple who is very enthusiastic, Jesus cautions that the Son of Man has no place to lay his head. To the disciple who wishes to delay his commitment in order to take care of an elderly parent, Jesus insists the time is now. To the disciple who still holds to family attachments, Jesus demands total loyalty. We are to announce the Kingdom of God where ever and when ever we find ourselves. We must receive the "Sacrament of the Present Moment" for only here and now do we encounter the mystery of God. St. Paul tells the Galatians in our second reading that we must live by the Spirit and love our neighbor as ourselves. Faithful disciples embark on a journey of listening and of walking with Jesus every day.
