14th Sunday Ordinary Time

English is a difficult language. We have many words with the same sound, different spelling and meaning. Take for example: "yolk" -- the yellow membrane that surrounds the embryo providing nutrition and circulation. Yet "yoke" can also mean a harness placed on a team of oxen to pull a wagon or plow; or a device placed on the shoulders of a person to balance and carry two loads. Jesus invites his listeners (those who are tired and carry heavy burdens) to come to him to be refreshed. "Take my yoke upon your shoulders and learn from me for I am meek and humble of heart." Amazing -- Jesus is asking people already weary to bear his yoke. Another load? Or does the "yoke" of Jesus (his wisdom and sacrifice) help us to carry and bear all the things. We are getting ready for Independence Day -- Monday is the 4th of July. True freedom is not license to do what we want but the maturity to accept the responsibilities that come with the blessings and benefits we too often take for granted. American "rugged individualism" must be balance with an appreciation of our solidarity with others and our dependence on God for all things -- especially the precious gift of life itself. Zechariah, in our first reading, envisions a future king who will come not as a warrior but an ambassador of God's peace. The prophet foresees God's dominion of peace "from sea to sea." May we experience God's peace in our nation today and accept the responsibilities that come with freedom. Let us pray for the men and women who serve our nation in war and peace.
