26th Sunday Ordinary Time
Perhaps for the first and only time in their careers, NFL officials will be applauded as they walk on the field. After 3 weeks of subs doing their best, official referees now are returning to make the close calls. In our Gospel, John observes another person driving out a demon in the name of Jesus but he is not one of them – an “official disciple.†John asks Jesus to stop him but Jesus says that one who does a mighty deed in my name cannot speak ill of me and whoever does a simple kindness like giving a cup of water will not go without reward. Just listening and watching the news will convince most folks that there are still demons in the world and in us that should be dismissed but we will also hear of happenings that inspire. Girls on a High School Cheerleading Squad decided to include girls in elementary school in special education to be with them on the sidelines. Little girls with particular needs are now able to cheer. It has brought about a profound change in the school community and has become a model for other schools. Annunciation is collaborating with a Methodist Church on Grand Island in a good work of bringing wash cloths, bars of soap and tooth brushes to children and families in Haiti – two faith communities working closely together in the name of Jesus. Together they are announcing and inaugurating the kingdom of God.
