Unexpected! The Apostles, those being sent to announce the Kingdom, those closest to Jesus, ask the Lord to increase their faith. That particular request is often on our lips from our heart to God. It is not easy to believe. Faith is a gift that is instilled and nurtured by our asking for more. We hear this honesty in Habakkuk, the prophet, who cries to God: “You are not listening. You are not intervening. Save us from the violence, destruction and misery that have befallen your people.†God replies: “Write the vision down. It has its time.†We all should write down what we believe and hope in i.e. our vision. With vision comes mission. St. Paul writes to Timothy to stir up the faith. Paul, in prison, encourages Timothy to keep the faith. When we encourage another in the faith we strengthen our own. Jesus does not reprimand the Apostles for asking for more faith. He assures them that even a little faith, the size of a mustard seed, can do great things. We are not alone in our efforts. God is with us. Jesus goes on to say: “Do not expect an award or recognition.†We are servants undeserving of credit. We stay the course because it is the right thing to do. On one occasion Jesus asks someone: “Do you believe?†The person responds: “Lord I believe but help me in my lack of faith.†This honest answer becomes our prayer today
