27th Sunday Ordinary Time
It is important for us to be attentive to the words of Sacred Scripture but also how they are delivered. Isaiah coveys his message in a ballad that he likely sang at a harvest feast. He sings of God’s care of the vineyard (i.e. people of Judah) and of God’s disappointment at the poor harvest of wild grapes. St. Paul writes a letter to the Church at Phillipi. Paul is in prison. He writes to lessen worry and anxiety in the community. Jesus tells a story or parable about tenants in a vineyard who are not good stewards. He is addressing the priests and elders who are rejecting his message and mission. When we appreciate the form or type of writing (e.g. song, letter or story) we have a better understanding of the message.
