James and John are not listening. Jesus was explaining how he embraced the title “Messiah†as one who is faithful to God and gives himself in sacrificial love for others. Jockeying for position, they ask Jesus to have a special place in his Kingdom. The two brothers are seeking recognition. Jesus is challenging them to be immersed in a life of service that will take them ultimately to the cross. Today, I ask you to listen to Larry Zielinski, chair of our finance committee, as he gives the annual financial report. But I want you to recall the period of time that his narrative chronicles: September 1, 2014 – August 31, 2015 – the fiscal year following the closing of our school. It was a very difficult year when we transitioned from loss and uncertainty into a rediscovery of the mission of Annunciation and renewal of parish life. Looking back, without dismissing the pain, we see God’s grace at work. Like James and John, we begin to understand better what true discipleship entails for those who follow Jesus. “For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life in ransom for many.â€
