2nd Sunday of Easter - Divine Mercy Sunday
“Now, Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book. But these are written that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name.†John, the evangelist, is explaining the purpose for writing the gospel. St. John does not use the word “miracle†but the word “sign†to describe the mighty words and deeds of Jesus. “Sign†points to the deeper significance or meaning of the happening that can bring observers and listeners to understanding and to insight regarding the person and mission of Jesus. There is a special sign in the church today – Pope Francis is canonizing Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II. Like the disciples in the Gospel, these two Pontiffs, recognized the Risen Lord in their midst and were open to the movement of the Holy Spirit in their own lives, in the Church and in the world. They both called the Church to renewal and to the ministry of reconciliation. They kindled hope and, in a world inclined to disbelief, they inspired faith. Both exhibited great respect for Jewish people. Their witness has become a sign of our common call to holiness. Like St. Thomas in the Gospel we can express our faith: “My Lord and my God.â€
