Our first reading is from the prophet or "messenger" Malachi. He criticizes the priests who are caught in offering sacrifices at the temple but have forgotten their office of teaching the Torah. Jesus criticizes the scribes and pharisees for not practicing what they preach; for being pretentious in their devotional garb; for seeking places of honor; and for insisting on titles like "Rabbi" to assert their authority. The words of Malachi and Jesus are a challenge and caution for clergy and lay religious leaders today. St. Paul (2nd reading) is a model of pastoral leadership. He announces God's Word to the Thessalonians like a "nursing mother" and he does not become an economic burden on the infant community. Jesus says it succinctly: "The greatest among you must be your servant."
