3rd Sunday of Advent

Some people get upset when government offices or department stores don't use the word "Christmas" but write or say: "Holiday." But the task of conveying and explaining the true meaning of Christmas is not for a politician or merchant. It is our responsibility! In the 17 century English soldiers occupied Ireland. Their assignment was to subdue the Irish and suppress the Catholic faith. Soldiers became suspicious when they noticed candles burning in windows and doors unlocked at night. The Irish families explained that they were welcoming Jesus, Mary and Joseph into their home at Christmas. What was not said was that they were signaling priests in hiding that this house was a safe place to offer Mass. "Christmas" comes from Christ + Mass. Two themes emerge and merge on the 3rd Sunday of Advent: light and joy. John the Baptist gives testimony to the light coming into the world. He is not the light but a witness to a power beyond himself. We too must confess that we are not the light but lamps or candles. Jesus is the light that is kindled in us. We are entrusted with the mission of bringing His light, way and truth into the world. St. Paul urges us always to rejoice. Mary of Nazareth rejoices in God her savior. If we hope to experience a measure of joy during the "Christmas" season we must welcome Christ as our Lord and Savior.
