5th Sunday of Easter

“A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John.” Our response: “Glory to you Lord!” What is “glory?” Our honor and praise to God? Our Gospel begins: “When Judas had left them, Jesus said: ‘Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him.’” Glory is revealed at the moment of betrayal! It was night. Yet a light shines. “Glory” can mean “an emanation of light.” We can see a common thread in our Scripture readings today. In Acts Paul & Barnabas experience persecution and rejection yet upon their return to Antioch, Syria they report what God had done with them and how God opened the door of faith to the Gentiles. In Revelation, John the Seer envisions a new heaven and new earth. God will dwell with us i.e. humanity! Tears will be wiped away. There will be no more death, mourning, wailing or pain for the old order has passed away. “Behold I make all things new.” St. Paul says we are earthen vessels i.e. divine light shining through our opaque, broken and wounded humanity. St. Irenaeus succinctly remarks: “God’s glory is man fully alive.”
