7th Sunday of Easter

Jesus prays at the Last Supper for his disciples reclining at table with him but also for us. “I pray for all who will believe in me through your words.” The supper was a commencement exercise: a coming to an end and a new beginning. Jesus says that he is returning to the Father and sending the advocate, God’s Spirit of unity and of love, to empower his disciples to continue to live His teaching and to share His life. On Friday I attended the Commencement Exercises at Christ the King Seminary. (Sr. Lori High received a degree -- Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry and Tammy Stanek received a Certificate of Continuing Education in Theological Studies.) Wish them congratulations! Sr. Margaret Carney, President of St. Bonaventure University, was recipient of an honorary degree. She gave the commencement address.  Sr. Margaret acknowledged the accomplishment of the graduates and spoke of the significance of the name “Francis” chosen by our new Pope.  In choosing the name “Francis” after St. Francis of Assisi, the Pope gave a focus for his office as Bishop of Rome. Priorities are set: Peace, the Planet and the Poor. In fidelity to the teaching and example of Jesus Christ, Pope Francis calls the Church and the world to resolve conflict peacefully; to respect/protect the earth/planet/creation as our living sanctuary; and to embrace the poor with compassion and love. We must be a Church of and for the poor. On Thursday we celebrated the Ascension of the Lord – Jesus going to the Father and coming to us. Indeed, the mystery of the Ascension is a wonderful commencement exercise! Together let us pray for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost to sustain us in God’s good work.
