The hit song: "Don't Worry; Be Happy" received a Grammy Award in 1989. The lyrics and melody struck a contemporary chord and sound like the words of Jesus in our Gospel today from Matthew. Jesus tells us not to worry whether about life, food, drink, body or clothing. We know we should trust in God's providence but I am afraid we are wired to worry. I told my Mom once that she shouldn't worry and she replied: "You are not a parent!" True. Moms and Dads naturally are concerned about their children and grandchildren. When Jesus tells us not to worry he is speaking about the worry that is not good for us or others. Worry is useless. It doesn't change the past or the future. Worry is harmful. Worry brings physical ailments. It saps our energy. Worry shows no confidence in our ability to cope and face challenges. Worry is not a disposition of faith. Jesus bids us "Be not afraid" and he promises that he will be with us always until the end time.
