The Ascension is a homecoming. Jesus after appearing to his disciples in his glorified body returns to the Father in heaven. Although seemingly leaving his disciples, Jesus mysteriously comes to them in a new relationship or homecoming. We tend to think of heaven as a place. Jesus promises at the Last Supper to prepare a place for his friends with God and then to come back to his disciples and take them to himself that “where I am you also may be.†Pope (Emeritus) Benedict explains. “In Christ, the humanity we all share has a new place in God.†Jesus being with God is also Jesus being with us – Emmanuel. Jesus assures his disciples that the Father and I will come and dwell with them. Heaven is not a place in the cosmos but a place in God. Heaven is a person. When we go to Christ we go to heaven.
