Christ The King
On the morning of November 23, 1927 in Mexico, a Catholic country, Miguel Pro, a Jesuit, was executed; charged with a plot against the government. His crimes were offering Mass, baptizing and hearing confessions. President Calles, who ordered his death before a police firing squad, allowed press coverage. Before Miguel was shot, he spoke the words: “Viva Christo Rey†– “Live Christ the King.†Photos of his execution became holy cards. “Christ the King†is more than a title we give to Jesus but a way of life for all who acknowledge him as king. His kingdom “does not belong to this world†but nevertheless it is being inaugurated here and now by subjects who are loyal to him above petty politics and even patriotism. The preface at Mass speaks of a kingdom of faith, holiness and grace; of justice, peace and love; and of truth. Jesus tells Pilate that he has come to testify to the truth. “Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.†Do we listen to his voice? Does Jesus have a claim on our hearts? Are we citizens of this world or the kingdom to come? The second reading from the Book of Revelation connects kingship to priesthood – our being priests. In imitation of Jesus we offer our lives on the altar of the earth and we dedicate our lives in service to others. “Viva Christo Rey.â€
