Corpus Christi
On Saturday morning at the end of a memorial Mass, the family passed out flower seeds: “Forget me not†– in loving memory of Lisa. “Remembering†is an essential part of the mourning and healing process. “Remembering†is the core dynamic of our faith. We gather for Mass remembering the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and, as we remember, Jesus becomes present. Jesus is present in the assembly even with our weakness and sin. We are the Body of Christ. Jesus is present in Sacred Scripture. Jesus is the Word of God and we are nourished during the Liturgy of the Word. Jesus is present in the bread and wine, in the Body and Blood of Christ that we receive and become. This wonderful Holy Communion includes those who have gone before us and are part of the communion of saints -- physically absent but spiritually present. Holy Communion includes the most vulnerable, the sick and poor in the world. Sr. Paschalia and Sr. Justina spoke last week about their care for children without parents in East Africa. They are with us at Mass and we are in solidarity with them in Jesus Christ. Eucharist is going into the world with the precious gift of Christ’s sacrificial love. Yesterday I attended a benefit for Matt who is recovering from a serious infection and amputation of two legs. The turnout of family and friends was unbelievable. Matt was able to take three steps on his new artificial legs. Overwhelmed by the kindness and support of family and friends, with deep humility, Matt said to me: “I am not worthy.†We are all unworthy to receive God’s love and life in Jesus Christ but we dare to pray: “Lord I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and my soul will be healed.â€
