"Epiphany" means "manifestation." Traditionally there are three: Magi coming to Bethlehem; the baptism of Jesus; and the wedding feast at Cana. In all three biblical accounts, God's glory is revealed. I find contemporary "manifestations" of God's glory in similar circumstances. Whether I am star gazing in the Caribbean or very early in the winter morning getting my newspaper, I am humbled and overwhelmed looking at all the stars. What a revelation: I am not the center of the universe! In my littleness and insignificance, I wonder about the creator and my place in the divine scheme of things. Baptisms are special moments when we see God on the face of a child or with adults desiring Easter sacraments and life in Christ. We too often forget that married love and family life can mirror God's love and presence. Two of my Christmas cards give witness. Helen writes that her husband Bill of 65 years died in March. "I'm lost without him but I am very thankful he was home and I was able to take care of him." Another card from Kristin and Aubree and four little boys under 6 years of age: "We are doing well working hard to train our precious gifts from God! The boys are a lot of fun, but what a responsibility we have. Please pray we are able to harness their energy to do God's will and be men of honor!!" Today may our eyes and ears, all our senses, be sensitive, attentive to God's awakening in our midst.
