Epiphany
“The Magi set out because of a deep desire prompted them to leave everything and begin a journey. It was though they had always been waiting for that star.” (Pope Benedict XVI) How often do we walk before dawn or during the night and not observe the stars? But on occasion the night sky catches our attention and in a twinkling of a star we are keenly aware of the magnificence of creation and our own insignificance. Today, we commemorate Wise Ones from the East being led to Bethlehem to pay homage to the hidden king. The gift bearers receive the precious revelation of God’s glory.
In the Gospel according to St. John (the Evangelist) John the Baptist and two of his disciples are watching Jesus walk by. John remarks: “Behold the Lamb of God.” The two disciples follow Jesus. Jesus turns and asks: “What are you looking for?” They reply: “Teacher where are you staying?” Jesus says: “Come and you will see.” We are seeking Jesus – a lifetime vocation. The author of “The Cloud of Unknowing” notes: “If you wish to keep growing you must nourish in your heart the lively longing for God. Though this loving desire is certainly God’s gift, it is up to you to nurture it.”
