During Advent we have been listening to the poetic words of the prophet Isaiah; to the pastoral and theological words of St. Paul and to the challenging words of John the Baptist. Now we hear about the quiet man -- Joseph. In our Gospel, the evangelist Matthew tells us that Joseph is a just man, an observant, faithful Jew. When he learns that Mary is pregnant before they lived together, he does not wish the harsh prescription of the law but a quiet divorce. He finds himself in dilemma. His personal integrity and empathy for Mary are at odds. He cannot find resolution. As with us, the conflicts of the day are with us at night in our dreams. An angel visit Joseph and reveals that he is part of God's plan. Mary is with child through the Holy Spirit. Joseph is asked to take Mary into his home as his wife and to name the baby boy Jesus. When he awakes he does as the angel requested by taking Mary into home. When the baby is born, Joseph names him Jesus. This action says publicly and legally that Jesus is Joseph's son. The quiet man utters the name Jesus which means "God saves." Joseph is an example for us during these remaining days of Advent. What better way to welcome Christ than by emulating Joseph: living with honesty and empathy, listening and surrendering to God's will. The quiet man speaks a powerful word.
