Mary, Mother of God

St. Paul writes to the Galatians: “When the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son born of a woman.” Today we honor Mary, the Mother of God. This title affirms the divinity of her son Jesus who is Son of God and Son of Man. There is a threefold birth of Christ: eternally from the Father, from the womb of Mary in Bethlehem and in our hearts. Mary kept all these things in her heart and reflected upon them. We too birth Jesus by keeping the Word of God and acting upon it. It is a noble resolution for the New Year. I pray the blessing of Aaron in the Book of Numbers: “May the Lord bless and keep you. May the Lord’s face shine upon you. May the Lord look upon you kindly and give you peace.”
