The First Sunday After Christmas, Feast of the Holy Family

Today we are celebrating the feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. We see the mystery of the birth of Jesus unfold within the family of Nazareth and the coming of Christ into our families today. In our society families are nuclear, broken, mended and blended. We have the traditional family of mom and dad raising the children but also single parents and grandparents raising the children. There are families with two moms and families with two dads. We celebrate Golden anniversaries of married love and fidelity. We also know the pain of separation and divorce. We must ask: Does the family of Nazareth have anything to say to contemporary families? A close reading of the infancy narratives in the Gospels according to St. Luke and St. Matthew shows Joseph and Mary dealing with fear, asking questions, accepting challenges and responding to threats on Jesus’ life. We can take solace knowing when Mary and Joseph were troubled they remained faithful to God and loyal and devoted to each other.

Pope Francis is asking for our input in preparation for the synod of bishops from around the world convening at the Vatican October 5–19, 2014. The theme is “Pastoral Challenges to the Family in the Context of Evangelization.” You may wonder why the family is being discussed in relationship to evangelization – the mission of Catholic Christians to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ. “Laypersons are called to share the Gospel closer to home, in places where the Church is no longer vibrant or plays little part in the lives of those who are baptized. In this context, the family emerges as the central agent in evangelization, for it is here that children first learn of God, are brought to the sacraments, and are taught the values and virtues of the Catholic faith”-- Brian Caufield, editor of Fathers for Good in Columbia Magazine. The Church we pass on to the next generation will depend greatly on how well we address challenges to the family today. For as Pope John Paul II said: “The future of the world and the Church passes through the family.”
