Like a rare triple play in baseball, we return to Ordinary Liturgical Time with three consecutive Sunday Solemnities: Pentecost (concluding the Easter Season), Most Blessed Trinity and Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. We know the feast is important when we start using the word: “Most.†These three Solemnities touch on essential mysteries of our Catholic faith: Holy Spirit, Blessed Trinity and Holy Communion.
The institution of Eucharist is commemorated on Holy Thursday when Jesus takes and shares bread and wine with his disciples as the precious gift of his very life, his body and blood, in anticipation of his sacrificial and redemptive death on the cross. Today, we celebrate the true presence of Jesus in Holy Communion. “Through the power of the Eucharistic prayer, the elements of bread and wine are transfigured into the body and blood of Jesus and people are invited to come forward and feast on the Lord.†-- Bishop Robert Barron
Saturday morning in St. Joseph Cathedral, Bishop Mike Fisher ordained Deacon Charles Johnson to priesthood. Today, on the Feast of Corpus Christi, Fr. Charles offers his first Mass in St. Stephen Church on Grand Island. I invite you to come next weekend, June 12-13, when Fr. Charles will be presiding and preaching at the Saturday 5 PM Mass and the 8 AM and 11 AM Sunday Masses.
Next Sunday, June 13, our teens and adult candidates will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation during the Sunday 5 PM Mass. Like the apostles, the women and Mary devoted in prayer in the Upper Room, the place of the Last Supper, we pray for the coming of the Holy Spirit on the confirmation class to renew their baptismal faith; to make them more fervent in prayer; to deepen their friendship with Jesus; to increase their involvement in the Church; to activate gifts of the Holy Spirit; and to empower them to be witnesses of Christ and of the cross in the world.
